I'd chime in for Magento, however, it really depends on your client's requirements as the Magento implementation and administration learning curve is a considerable investment. So Magento, while amazing, could well be an overkill and in that case looking at CubeCart, Joomla+Virtuemart etc... would be more advisable.

Unless you are planning to give your client an out-of-the box install, and leave it up to them to get around the admin, the cost in effort of a Magento project in my opinion, is not trivial. Then you have to consider hosting a Magento site. If the site is going to turn around any kind of serious volume and cope with considerable traffic (as all eCom sites should strive to achieve) you'd need to consider at least a VPS if not dedicated host. Magento is very hungry and I'd look into their forums for posts about optimisation and performance tuning.

Then there is ongoing support. I wouldn't just plonk a Magento site into a client's lap and leave them. As they say, with great power comes great responsibility :).

This is my opinion and I don't mean to put anyone off but I believe that a Magento project needs to be well justified, planned and thought through. It is a serious investment from both the provider and the client and offers amazing ongoing involvement for both parties.

Kind regards,
Robert

Hi guys,

I've had some clients ask for an online shopping cart system for their
NZ based retail store with several hundred products.

It's been 4-5 years since I set up an online store for someone.  At the
time I was using oscommerce.

I was wondering what your recommendations for an ecommerce solution
would be now?

Still oscommerce?

Magnetocommerce.com?  (Looks good but seems to lack payment gateways)

Any suggestions for solutions for me to check out would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks!
