Does the MySQL query cache actually work? I have heard various things
to the contrary, but haven't actually used it in production, so I
don't know for certain.

Are there any benefits in using the query cache, as opposed to just
indexing the f**k out of frequently used columns and caching elsewhere
on the filesystem or memcached?
