Yes, this is partially because of how the pages are constructed. Both
will be part of the SEO backend work that is coming up.

I don't like the strategy that the Joomla team has taken with their
SEO approach as well, but like on other websites, a SEO module based
on a url wrapper table will do the trick.

The additional problem is here that Selecon has printed about 100 urls
onto brochures, catalogues and other media, so telling them "the CMS
does it that way" won't be welcome.
Last time I looked at Silverstripe the friendly urls were directly
based on the content, not independent. I would be interested if this
has changed, I have considered using Silverstripe for smaller sites.
