Hmm,

Layout wise, definately an improvement.

But aside from the nicer and softer graphical elements like the dots and
badges, I have to say I liked the older concept more.

1. The top half above the fold at 1400 x 1050 isn't too bad, I see just down to
where the calendar icons are. Further down is where the overload begins for me.
There's just too much colour with the separate colours (and styles) for the
most popular ranking on the left, calendars at centre, and ads on the right. It
just screams, and while I think your regular users will get used to it, it's a
bit of a turn off to first timers. I simply can't see at first glance where the
focus is.

2. Not sure if that yellow for your tabs is your colour. Great for usability -
after seing the top nav, eyes are instantly drawn to the other important
elements of the site. I dunno, something about it on white doesn't sit right
for me.

3. I'm sure this would have been tried, but I think the site would look alot
better with a different (darker) bg outside the main content to define it. I
just can't imagine what that would do to the above two points however.

4. Event detail pages are displaying full size images directly in the same
window. I don't class myself as a usability expert, but I have seen so many
people (incl. myself) completely close a site when they actually want to go
back because of this.

Add event form is great. The big help button is easy to find.

All up, I like the new layout is a winner. The colour concepts not so much.

Cheers
Aaron

Where do you want the user to focus their attention. The now with 354% more
awesome is where the eye is immediately drawn I would say (I, in fact, find it
quite distracting as my eye is drawn to it all the time). Great for promoting
your own branding. If you want people to look at the content then maybe drop
the red background colour back a bit? Dunno.

Obviously you are always going to have this trouble due to the type and
amount of content but there are so many boxes screaming for my attention on the
front page it is difficult to work out where to look first and what is or
should be important to me as a user.

I should point out that I am viewing the site on an ASUS eeePC so the screen
size is small so maybe that is affecting my impression. The site looks great
on the small screen BTW.

    Hi guys,

We've finally redesigned the Eventfinder website:

    http://www.eventfinder.co.nz

It was 18 months since any design work had been done on Eventfinder, while
we were busy working on other events sites. It's great to finally have had a
chance to breath more life into our own project.

We're especially proud of the new 'add event' form which has been the
recipient of plenty of usability attention this time around.

Any feedback, criticisms, suggestions, etc will be gratefully received.

    Kind regards,
    James McGlinn
