Thanks Sigurd - that looks very promising. Thanks to all for the replies - it's for a site focused heavily on users who will likely be wanting to use macrons, but will have a wide variety of skill levels, so unfortunately pointing people to OS settings etc isn't a viable option at this stage.
The build is almost complete and we settled on tinymce a while ago (it's a Drupal 5 site), so I'm loathe to go and pull it out to work with another rich text editor.
