Hey Pete, Also worked with SilverStripe a lot and I'm a big fan. It's quite a different experience from Drupal or Wordpress. You'll find far fewer modules than Drupal and a better developer experience than Wordpress, but as you say, the community is much smaller.
All in all though, high quality product that is fun to work with.
