Last time I used Magento I was impressed with all the basic stuff that you'd expect with a ecommerce tool.
We need to do some really custom stuff and it turned out to not be the right solution for the job though. I guess that the case with most off of the shelf stuff - sometimes it just more effort to customise stuff! The knowledge base was good enough though.
