I'm using that old HTC Magic too. In fact, it's the only android-based
phone officially released in NZ.

The reason I chose this phone was just because I was able to do java
programming. If I can do 'Object-C', I would choose iphone. (I hate
'Object-C', by the way.) This was the most important reason I don't
want to get an iphone.

I am enjoying android app programming these days. :-D

fyi, There is a pretty good alternative for crappy android 1.6 of HTC Magic.
(It seems to me that vodafone NZ have no interest on their old phone's
OS upgrading.)

It's quite experimental one. (version number 6.0.0-RC2) But It works
great! and it's android 2.2 (froyo) based. I'm using it at this
moment.
