Hi Glenn,

I agree with Aaron, and would add that it's better to buy books about general programming good practise than a particular language.

Code Complete would be a great place to start - http://www.cc2e.com/Default.aspx

Hi Glenn,

Honestly if I was starting out today I wouldn't really bother to buy a book. They go out of date too quickly and I generally may use them a bit to start with but then just end up using online references. Plus, not only are you killing the rain forest, it is hard to copy and paste from a printed book. ;-)

There are plenty of useful videos and other resources out there showing the basics. For example http://www.youtube.com/user/JREAMdesign might be a good place to start.

Then from there the http://php.net site is actually and excellent reference materials included in the documentation (including basic tutorials).

From there I would recommend getting a mentor or even hop onto mailing lists such as this for guidance.

The best way to really learn for most people is to start with a purpose. Having a small project or goal to start with that means something to you will most likely keep you engaged longer and also hopefully produce something you need/want.

Best of Luck
