For what it's worth, I'm fully with you on this. I can't imagine being
constrained by Windows - would feel sooo claustrophobic and ad hoc by
comparison. Linux is a system build by developers for developers... so
it's not surprising that it's well tuned for that set of use cases. And
the advantages of proper software management (e.g. via Debian or Ubuntu)
with the availability of 30,000+ application (most of them development
oriented) cannot be overstated in my opinion.
Also, fully agree on your GIMP point - we have been doing commercial web
development for 14 years now, and have never used any graphical tools
other than GIMP (raster) and Inkscape (vector). Doesn't seem to have
harmed us any :)
