I would say that laravel is much better codeigniter and a good alternative. Its basic concept is based much on codeigniter but there are heaps more better parts. My private and work-related sites use laravel as well. Highly recommended by me. ;-)
FYI. you don't have to use its ORM. you can use your own raw sql.
