As a side issue, I'm looking at how to streamline the use of the modified
properties and nodes maps in the {{ModifiedNodeState}} and {{MutableNodeState}}
classes. Especially I'd like to replace the current {{null}} entries in the
nodes map with non-existent {{NodeState}} instances to simplify the handling of
cases like modifications to a readable child of a non-readable parent.
