I got back with several other Club members from North
Carolina late last night. We travelled there last Friday so
had about 8 cycling days. We left about 20C sunny weather to
come home to -3C and snowing (grrrr). My bike had a nice
covering of road salt. Yum. I cannot carry my camera while
cycling, here are some links to aerial photos and maps of
the area:

Here is an overview map of where we did most of our cycling
in North Carolina (Moore County):

Here is an aerial photo of the hotel we stayed in, near
Aberdeen (Motel 6). It is the three buildings side by side:

Here is a notorious corner in Carthage where we made
numerous wrong turns. If you go next year, watch out for
this one. I don't know how many times we road around that
building in the middle. You can see the track we wore in the
pavement (teehee):

We had lunch in a Fried Chicken Restaurant here in Robbins.
It is the building closest to the bottom of the photo to the
left of the Y in the road. A dump truck almost turned
several of us into strawberry jam at the interection after
lunch:

We had lunch in a Hot Dog Stand in Ellerbe. It is the
building in the upper right. That trip was the pick of the
week - little wind and about 15C. There were about 20 of us
who did that loop:

There were over 20 OBC members there. I cycled almost 600
kms and we only got rained out on one day (Thurs) which my
legs desparately needed. Most of the roads were in
near-perfect condition, and the motorists were very
bike-friendly, even on busy, narrow roads. I do not recall
anyone giving us "the bird" and many motorists waved to
us....hmmm...I hope waving in "southern drawl" does not
translate into "Get the hell out of the way!"

Members going to Virginia should use the above website to
recce there cycling routes. The photos are a little dated
('93) but do not appear to be that much different. Note the
"Styles" options in the blue menu bar (under "advanced
find") - "Topo" view is easier to navigate but "Image" gives
you the actual photos. Also note if you zoom in too much and
try to switch back to Topo view, it will say "not found" so
you have to un-zoom first.

Natural Resources Canada is going to have a similar web
site, but it is not up yet. Hopefully, it'll be up before
Rideau Lakes:

Thanks to all who were there for the fun. Sometimes I wish I
was old enough to be retired. I would have loved to stay at
least another week. Cheers for now.
