This is one of those silly records. The speed record, by definition, on
rollers is absolutely zero. If you are moving relative to the ground you
are not on rollers. I saw a web site where the person claimed to go as fast
as a jet fighter taxiing on the ground and it turned out that he did it on
rollers, bolted firmly stationary with an outer frame that held the bike
still. He used aero wheels of course, which is actually what he was
selling. All that he was referring to was the velocity of the rim in its
rotation around the axle. Now having said that, I can boast that I have
briefly reached 200 RPM at the pedals. If I used a 53:12 gear (9.275
meters) that is 111.3 KPH. Gee since there is very little friction on the
rollers, I could have used a 72:11 perhaps and......well you do the math.
Of course at that point I would have had to construct a solid frame etc,
etc.

But more seriously, if you can reach 120 RPM on the rollers, you are doing
well. 160 to 180 ridden smoothly is what I would expect a good sprinter to
get easily and 200 RPM without any steadying brace is perhaps superhuman,
but then, I am too modest to call myself that. Don't forget that these
numbers are without any friction devices.

Subject: [obc] speed record on rollers

I read the latest newsletter regarding the speed record of 164.1 km/h
on rollers. What is the speed that some of the racers in the club can
reach? I got up to 65km/h before I chickened out. I think I'll move the
fan from the front before I try again.
