GIRO NEWS: Thursday night in San Remo, around 400 police agents came down in
San Remo in search of banned substances. For more than 3-1/2 hours the Giro
participants experienced a similar nightmare to the one that 1998 Tour de
France riders went through. The police raid occurred the night before what
would have been the "Queen Stage" of this edition of the Giro d'Italia. The
riders were faced with many embarrassing situations. For instance, Mario
Cipollini, who was being visited by his wife, had to allow the police to
search through his wife and son's personal belongings. After a night where
everyone stayed awake, what could have been a decisive stage was suspended.
There had been rumors that the Giro could be suspended, but the teams couldn
't reach an agreement and the race will go on.
According to unconfirmed reports, the police found numerous doping
substances in their search through all the hotel rooms and team vehicles.
Judicial sources informed that the police had found doping substances and
small lab kits to run analysis. The objects confiscated will be analyzed by
order of the chief district attorney of Florence, Antonio Guttarduro.
According to the D.A. the reason for the raid was the finding of syringes at
the hotels in Montevarchi, where a stage concluded. It is estimated that
more than 200 bottles were confiscated, containing substances like
testosterone, caffeine, corticoids and stimulants. There was also a lot of
medicine bottles without labels, blood samples contained in special
containers, which the teams could use to analyze and check the hematocrit
levels. There was also a certificate of analysis, which showed a hematocrit
level superior to the maximum allowed. The police reported that during the
operation, numerous syringes and bags with substances were thrown out the
hotel windows, some of them at the security forces.
