On the Saturday of the Rideau Lakes ride, I crashed while descending the
hill into Westport.
I have no memory of what happened except the onset of a violent,
high-speed wobble that ultimately sent me out-of-control across the
highway and plowing into the gravel shoulder at 60+kph.
After that, I remember only being strapped to a spinal board and being
loaded into an ambulance.
I know there were several riders directly behind me at the time of the
accident. I'd be interested to hear from them what they might have seen.
There are no legal or other "issues" here. I only want some help in
understanding what happened.
I'd like to hear the whole story of how I'm "lucky to be alive". I want
to know if my first question was "Is my bike okay?", the test of true
guy-ness.
In the meantime, I'm recovering, albeit slowly.
At least my helmet did what it was supposed to and got good and busted
in the process.
And just as critically, my new "eyewear" stayed on, with one of the
lenses being destroyed instead of my eye. I had never thought much,
before this, about having proper eye protection when crashing.
Live and learn...
