PRESS RELEASE TEAM MERCURY - VIATEL

16th GP Cycliste de Beauce, Canada - 2.4
Stage 2 started on the south shore of Quebec City in Charny . With the
exception of one small section, the course followed the Chaudire river
south into the Beauce region and finished in Beauceville, just north of
St-Georges. The 168.2 km is rolling and winding. The first quarter of the
course is a gradual elevation increase, then the elevation goes up to 600
meters quickly and the 'rollers' get bigger. Before today's start it was
raining heavily and then quit just as the racers were called to the line.

The main peleton was basically kept together by an active Mroz team. There
were occasional small breaks, but nothing got more than three minutes. On
the flat finishing run, Mroz was in control but with a headwind it was very
tough. With 5 km to go Mercury-Viatel's Mike Sayers, Chris Wherry, Scott
Moninger and Derek Bouchard-Hall took over. With 1.5 km to go the
Mercury-Viatel Train took off. At 600 meters the Navigators tried to shake
things up with their own train, but Mercury's Henk Vogels got on with Baden
Cooke and Gord Fraser. At 200 meters Cooke dropped off Gord who eventually
took the stage win with a classic 'Flash Gordon' sprint. Gord had time to
glance over his shoulder, sit up and put his hands in the air. GC
classification remained the same.

With this victory the Mercury-Viatel Cycling team is at 47 wins for the 2001
Season.
