I found myself a very busy tour leader at McDonalds last Tuesday night. I
guessed there were as many as 24 cyclist but at least 21 rode. two showed up
at the last moment as the two groups were starting to leave. One required
information about us and I expect that cyclist to show next week. The other
was a new OBC member who approached me as I was about to get bike mounted.
Asked if this was the Tuesday OBC tours and I said yes. I then asked if said
person was a member of OBC, answer was yes new, I then asked if said person
had any group riding training, answer no. I said something like oh as we
were leaving and it was past six, and I really did not want to give personal
instructions and have to stop the groups from leaving. cyclist said do you
ride in groups answer yes, Oh I ride alone, I do not ride in groups. Cyclist
then departed over my protest that we teach group riding. Never found out
cyclist name and was left wondering why did this cyclist join OBC if cyclist
preferred to ride alone?
With such a large group we had to split into to groups and so Tim became the
faster group leader and I took the slower group. which included a non member
and a really new member as said person handed me their OBC membership forms
and cash which has now been received by Rosmarie along with $30.00 from non
members.
This worked out very well and I plan to use it in future. After the Rideau
Lakes Tour any riders can
ride in a fast group by organising prior to leaving or by riding off the
front of the pack.
"Sir James" will concern himself only with the cyclist that remain in the
pack. All cyclist will stay together prior to RLT unless we have to many
cyclist for one pack or we have a rider that cannot maintain 20 km's per
hour in which case that cyclist will be asked to drop out and James or a
volunteer will see the rider safely home.
This week we did Metcalfe. by way of Riverside East, Smyth Rd, Russell Rd,
Baseline to Mitch Owen then right on 27 to Metcalfe. The faster group was at
Metcalfe when we arrived and over munchies and drink I conferred with Tim to
insure that they knew the way we were returning. Return West on 6 to Highway
31, North on 31 one block to John Quinn, then left onto Parkway Rd which
becomes Apple Orchard Rd, right on Manotick Station Rd , right on Mitch Owen
to Bowsville Road, cross Lietrim to Alert Rd and returned to Billings Bridge
by Airport Parkway.
Total km's from Billings Bridge and return 67 km's.
We had only one problem and that was we lost one rider leaving Metcalfe and
I was not made aware of it until we were on Parkway Rd. I ask the group to
wait at highway 31 for me and I went back looking. I waited for a period of
time at the corner of Parkway and John Quinn and when the rider who was not
new to the group did not show I guessed that he crossed Highway 31 instead
of turning .
I sent a e-mail to this member to confirm that he was okay and that he
returned safe. It was confirmed that he did in fact cross over 31 and when
he did not find John Quinn he went North on Stagecoach to Apple Orchard Rd.
I made suggestions in the e-mail to insure there is no repeat of being
dropped in the future,
We really did not have any really slow riders this time and the slow groups
average was 25.2 Km's per hour.
We arrived at Metcalfe right at the half time mark of 7.30 PM and it was a
little dark on arrival at Billings Bridge but I suspect it was mainly due to
approaching thunderstorms as I say lighting on the way home.
