Hi all,

Many thanks to Sir James for the loan of his maps and his excellent
directions.

Margo and I had a great day touring Montreal. We arrived in St. Lambert
around 11:30. The skies were a little cloudy but the sun shone for most
of the day. Riding across the flood control gates the stiff breeze
made it feel like we were on the coast instead of crossing a river.
Once we made it to Ile des Soeurs the winds were calmed by the trees
and we were on our way. For what looks like a small island there are a
lot of people living on it, lots of expensive cars too.

The ride through Verdun and up through LaSalle was great, there are not
as many roller-bladers and cyclists as would be found on Ottawa bike
paths. Once we turned back to Montreal at the Marina the slight tail
wind made the 20 km speed limit hard to obey. We saw a bike cop giving
tickets to two cyclists. I sure hope they are not enforcing that speed
limit.

We arrived at the Atwater market around 2:00. The market is amazing. I
wished the car wasn't so far away! A couple of T-bones and fresh corn
would make a great BBQ to end the day. We had gourmet sandwiches and
pastries from the bakery at the back of the market.

Old Montreal was just as I remembered. The horse drawn carriages and
the port district make a great place to visit. There was a display
using flowers and shrubs to create images that represented different
cultures. It was six dollars to enter and we decided to admire the
display from afar. You know those little scooters with roller blade
wheels, well just wait, coming to shop near you, an electric version.
These little gems were being rented out to any one with the 25$ an hour
fee. We saw a lot of children zipping around crowded paths on these
crazy things.

One of the things I wanted to do when I got to Ile Notre-Dame was to
race around the Gilles-Villenuve race track. To my great disappointment
large signs read "Attention Cyclists: training at high speed is strictly
prohibited". Oh well, I will have to wait to I do a triathlon in
Montreal for that pleasure.

There was a rowing competion being held in the Olympic basin. I liked
seeing the boats up close, pretty thin objects to place eight people in
and race accross the water.

Unfortunately due to our late lunch we did not have the appetite for
pizza at Pizzaz's. It will just have to wait until next year.

A very enjoyable day.

Mike and Margo.
