Hi All. I don't normally listen to Lowell Green, but I was
in a vehicle and the driver happened to have it tuned into
CFRA this morning. Anyhow, he was on about cyclists today
(and "renaming" the Ottawa Roughriders CFL team). He said
there are 16 "smoking" bylaw enforcement officers and there
should be at least that many enforcing bike laws. The thing
that really got me is at one point he said words to the
effect "Show me a person in a bicycle helmet, and I'll show
you an idiot.".......are any hairs standing on the back of
necks at this point? He hasn't changed a bit in 30 years. I
lump him in with "pseudo-journalists" like Jerry Springer,
Haroldo Rivera, Jenny...whatever her name is... and all
those other pointless shows that I never watch. The only
Jerry Springer episode I ever liked was on "The Simpsons",
where Jerry and his entire audience get vaporized by aliens.
Anyhow, Lowell was fostering lots of stereotypes about
cyclists. The only point I agreed with him on was that bikes
don't belong on sidewalks, which is true. I would welcome
more enforcement, since I would have nothing to worry about.
However, listening to his show would lead one to the
conclusion that sidewalks is the only place you could find
bikes in this town. I guess it's only the sidewalk riding
menaces that get noticed.
