..Rosmarie, Who did I miss? Whose name did I misspell? And of course, comments! ..David ---------------------------------------- ..To Potential North Carolina 2002 Participants ..From David "not the organizer" Lennox: Apologies for a long post. It won't happen again--until the next time! GENERAL: - N. Carolina Info will be in the Jan/Feb Spokesperson. - N. Carolina is not an official sanctioned OBC Tour, but OBC riders constitute the majority. - N. Carolina is an ad hoc, "do-your-own-thing" experience, unlike Virginia or Vermont Tours. You make your own reservations and arrange your own transportation. - As a service, I will maintain and publish e-mail "Who-is-Going" lists from those who let me know. This list will contain whatever info people give me, e.g., who is going, request for room and/or ride-partner, space for extra bikes, etc. That is my involvement--I am not the coordinator nor matchmaker. Repeat last sentence! Note that there are always several repeat returnees that don't bother with this list. They just show up. - Motel-6 rates are listed below. They have housekeeping units (extended stay), which contain a two-burner electric hot-plate, basic utensils, plastic dishes, small fridge/freezer, micro-wave oven and sink. - Food costs are expensive in Cdn dollars, therefore, buy your dry goods, sealed pasta sauce and legal amounts of spirits in Ottawa. If you cannot get a house-keeping unit, buy your goodies, suck up and use someone else's cooking facilities. - If this is your first North Carolina experience, talk to someone listed below. And consider going down with someone you know and can ride with! WHEN (last years dates): - Anytime mid-March to beginning of April-your choice. Core times below are when most participants are there. School and work conflicts cause some riders to book other dates. - Suggested core week1 is Sat 17 Mar to Fri 23 Mar (inclusive). Some folks prefer Sunday to Saturday. - Suggested core week2 is Sat 24 Mar to Fri 30 Mar (inclusive). Some folks prefer Sunday to Saturday. WHERE: - Base of operations is the Motel-6, 408 Sandhills Blvd, Aberdeen, NC, 28315, Tel. (910) 944 5633. It is backset several hundred meters from US Hwy 1, just far enough to negate traffic noise. - There are lots of supermarkets and restaurants nearby. Bring lots of money if you are going to use the latter exclusively! RATES (last years quotes): - US $ as quoted 6 Jan 01: - $238.70 per week for double occupancy; - $216.86 per week for single occupancy - $45.77 per day for double occupancy; and - $39.23 per day for single occupancy. - Confirm prices when making reservations. - If you desire an "Extended Stay" unit, make sure you mention this when making reservations. ROUTE and DISTANCE: - Two suggested routes - both approximately 1500-1600 km, depending on your driving particulars--a two-day drive for most. From Ottawa, get to Interstate(IS) 81, usually via Ontario Hwys 416/401. 1. IS 81 to Roanoke, VA; then US Hwy 220 to Greensboro, NC; US Hwy 220/IS 73 to NC Hwy 211; Hwy 211 to Aberdeen. It helps if you have a navigator to get through the Greensboro area. 2. IS 81 to IS 66 (VA); IS 66 to US Hwy 17; Hwy 17 to Fredericksburg, VA; IS 95 to Fayetteville, N.C.; US Hwy 401 & State Hwy 211 to Aberdeen. 2a. If you travel at night, then a slightly shorter route is to take Hwy 1/IS 85 south of Richmond, VA, through the Chapel Hill/Raleigh region. The latter will be slow during day hours. - Suggested overnight stops along IS 81: a. Harrisburg, PA (~halfway). (a bit early); b. Hagerstown, MD (about right, ~9 hrs); c. Martinsburg, W. VA (about right) d. Harrisonburg, VA (about max). e. Rest stops, snoozing in vehicle. Strictly speaking, against the law, but some do it. If this is for you, stay at a busy rest stop, and park near the 18-wheelers--for safety! - To get the best motel deals, pick up Motel Coupon Books at the appropriate state welcome stops. CYCLING ROUTES, CLOTHING: - A Moore County cycling map is usually available at Rainbow Cycles in Southern Pines (nearby) and at the Aberdeen Junior Chamber of Commerce. It lists the 3-4 roads that are not cycling friendly. - Suggested routes are loops of 70-100 km from the motel. All returnees have their own maps and will help you with route planning at the motel. - Moore County is rolling, winding, sandy and Jack Pine covered territory. It is also hilly, but no Vermont-type climbing. The suggested cycling back-roads are quiet, well paved and traffic is usually courteous. For variety, a ride on the nearby Fort Bragg army base perimeter road is suggested, if this road is still open. A flat out-of-county ride to Laurenburg is also suggested. No maps are available for these rides. Go with experienced navigators. - And when you are finally in shape, there is the Tour de Moore, a century ride around the perimeter of the county. - This is spring riding, albeit normally warm. Bring an appropriate mix of cycling clothing. WHO GOES; GROUPS and MISC: - Generally, fitness buffs, Tourist 2 and Tourist 1 types. - "Groups will form!" Something like Sunday Rides from Billings Bridge. - Departure times vary. Some are earlier risers. Some are normal! So, between 0830 & 0930, according to weather, your group, ride distance, etc. - Fitness buffs, in-shape Sportif and Tourist 1 types tend to do 100+ km/day, others, 60-70 km. Some insidious types arrive in shape after a winter of cross-country skiing. Avoid these people! - Do we all stick together? Sometimes, if the group is small, almost never if the group is large. The "Groups will form" rule, remember! And there are those hills! - Do the various groups mix. Sometimes, but not every day, not every km. "Go-fast" riders like a RR, once in a while. - Some do their daily riding as a single excursion, some come back to the Motel for lunch and go out a second time after a post-lunch snooze. - Recreational & getting back-into-shape riders tend to do the latter. Yes, gruppo relaxo is the motto for some! - Over the years, a low of 7-8 riders & a max of 30 riders has shown up over the two weeks. So riding patterns and groups are never the same from year-to-year, nor day-to-day. Some do their own thing, others need company! - What do you do on a rain day? Ride, if you are in training, or drive up to Chapel Hill/Raleigh and visit Performance Cycles. Don't buy anything, just look! - "Over Sixty Rule - Elders never have to pull, unless they want to!"
