and from the truly weird files: I met a fellow on tour in france last year (incidentally, a nationally-ranked cyclocross rider) who swore by putting salt in his water for riding. He claimed it helped prevent cramps, better than electrolyte replacement solutions. Apparently, over the years, he acclimated to more and more salt, to the point that nobody ever dared ask for a sip...er, twice.
He didn't boil it first, however, as recommended below.
