......been there, done that too, about 4 years ago. No advance warning -
realized that the shadow was ice about 50 m away, must have hit it doing
at least 30 km/h. My recollection was that it was at least a couple of
metres "long". Released the brakes just before going over it. Survived.
I skied under there last weekend and it all came back....
