Greg,
I do this all the time and have had no problems.  They even sell a brass 
insert now at some stores to make the rim hole smaller.  I personally don't 
bother with this insert.  I just make sure the valve stem is centered in the 
rim hole and use the lock nut provided with the tube to hold it in place.
My reason for doing this is in order to avoid switching my floor pump set up 
back and forth.
