I got a rather unpleasant surprise today on the Sunday tour today. I
raised my water bottle up to take a drink at a traffic light. I
squeezed it gently and the bottle cracked almost 3/4 of the way
around. Fortunately, most of its contents landed on the ground and
not all over me or my bike. It was a white plastic bottle. I put some
ice in it before the ride and filled it up with water and gatorade
crystals. Was it thermal shock? Anyone know what happened to it? I've
never had this happen before and want to avoid it, especially when it
is hot.

The last time something like this happened, I was sitting in a
restaurant in Edmonton with a friend of mine. He ordered a large milk
to drink. It came in a beer mug. Just as he raised it to his mouth
there was a torent of milk and we both sat stunned, covered head to
toe with milk, wondering what had happened. He looked at the bottom
of the mug and it was gone - it was sitting on the table. As it
turned out, the waitress had taken it right out of the washer (hot)
and filled it with ice cold milk. The bottom was much thicker than
the rest and the thermal shock caused the bottom to completely break
off. We laugh about it now.
