Has it been in use for a while? HDPE (high density polyethylene - what a lot of water bottles I've seen are made of) like many plastics is not immune to ultraviolet degradation. It can get brittle after long exposure to sunlight (damn little of that this year!). I've seen such cracks but usually nothing so dramatic.
