I have a Garmin eTrex Vista GPS with MapSource software
http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVista/index.html This provides a very
detailed moving map of Ottawa plus other numerous functions like travelling
time, distance etc. The GPS can record route info and be uploaded into a
computer (OBC Grand Prix route with elevation data). Outside the city the
map is only major roads. It was purchased for hiking not cycling. If you
take the time to set waypoints (easier to do on a computer, then download to
the GPS) it can be useful tool on an unknown route.
Distraction: No, (usually carry it in my back pocket)
Nifty gadget: Yes.
