The first formal public consultation meeting on cycling and pedestrian trails
is being hosted by the Municipality of Chelsea, on Tuesday 29 October, 2002,
7:00 pm, at the Larrimac Golf Club. In this session the Chelsea Department of
Recreation and Cultural Services will present the results of its pre-
feasibility study, preliminary highlights from the B3 survey, and specific
proposals for phase one of a plan for pathways. Contact: Bruce Devine

The "Chelsea Bicycle Lanes and Railway Trail Feasibility Study: Final Report"
was prepared in 2001 under contract with the Municipality of Chelsea by Kevin
Jones, Land Use and Recreation Planning Solutions, Chelsea, Quebec
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> / 819-827-3747. Both the roadway and railway options were
divided into sections and each section was assessed individually. This approach
allowed for the development of individual sections to be prioritised based on
the cost estimates and expected level of use. The railway corridor trail was
found to be less expensive to develop, and generally a safer recreational
pathway option, than paving the shoulders of Route 105. The 7.1 km railway
section between Tenaga and Ramsay Road was considered a top priority that would
link the many small residential communities located between Route 105 and the
Gatineau River. The author also emphasizes in the report that both the railway
trail and roadside bicycle lanes should not necessarily be considered as two
distinct options, but rather as a complementary set that together would serve
both recreational and commuting needs.
