Contemporary Art Days 2015
Between Dissent and Discipline: Art and Public Space

15 – 16 October 2015

Moriska Paviljongen, Inkonst and Inter Arts Center in Malmö.

The last decades have been characterised by an increased artistic interest in
public space. Cities around the world are growing at an unprecedented pace.
This poses new challenges, affects common space, but it also brings about new
forms of community organisation. In search of a direct encounter and engagement
with people and the pressing issues of the world we all share, more and more
artists, collectives, independent initiatives as well as museums, galleries and
institutions have focused on the public sphere and its ongoing mutations and
redefinitions. The resulting interactions have various points of departure,
sometimes in response to these mutations, sometimes provoking them and other
times turning away from them.

Working publicly is a complex process that entails a considerable number of
challenges, both general and specific. These challenges relate to fundamental
questions for the practice itself, such as: What is public art? What role does
the dichotomy consensus versus conflict play in how we understand and relate to
public space? Who will be affected by the process of engagement – the context
of the intervention or the intervening artists? What are the shifting roles
between independent and institutional actors? And last but not least, what is
the relationship between new forms of citizenship and decision-making
authorities in the planning process of spaces and cities, and how is art
entangled in it?

The conference will engage with these questions and others through lectures,
workshops, screenings and other activities by inviting a number of
international and local thinkers, critics, curators, artists and other actors
who are involved in the processes of initiating, commissioning and producing
art related to public space.

Participation fee: 800 SEK (includes lunch and coffee).
