Hi!
I have been using obs since 0.3, congrats to all of you involved
in the project!
I'm specially interested on its multicast mode. Right now I'm
using it at the office, although I have a special personal interest on it.
I see the development is continuous and found it exciting,
specially the multichannel feature, user control, etc.
Here we speak spanish, and my suggestion is to organize things so
that translations are more viable and maintainable between versions; I
translated the 0.3 cgi's but it will be nice to have the translations
seperated from CGI's, and be defined by configuration files or something
like that. Read this as my offer to do the Spanish version :)
Now, the questions.
I have about 20Gb of mp3's made mainly from CDs I or other job
mates own. I have tweaked a distributed lame project so that I can use my
linux workstation as ripping and collection server, and made a Windows NT
(low priority) service so that all the windows NT/2K machines on my
network participate in the encoding using lame.
Lookups are made to the CDDB, and then files are tagged, sending them
later to the obs server using SubmitTrack -t. If anyone is interested on
this, drop me a note, don't expect nothing fancy, though it works real
fine.
I encode all the mp3's with lame, 128 VBR, jointstereo, these are
the parameters I use:
-V1 -mj -h --athtype 3 --lowpass 19.5 -b 128
I mention this because although the obsd server seems to work
fine, clients experience some glitches (due to VBR?):
freeamp/Linux: this can be run for weeks, but sometimes is needed
to stop/play the player, or music is wrongly decoded, or skips. The player
doesn't crash though.
freeamp/windows NT SP5/6: makes system unstable and lot of
applications crash and run unreliable (word, etc). Does anybody have
experienced this? any solution? I use the latest Freeamp of course.
That made me start to look for a winamp plugin (in_rtp.dll). Is available
from some net stations.
Problem is that nobody says which version is, and it seems that old
versions work better than the latest ones. Once again, the player
sometimes start to skip or decode wrongly, and a stop/play sequence solves
the matter. Anyone with a fine in_rtp.dll?
Question: may this problems be due to VBR encoding? may the use of
reencoding solve the matter? Is reencoding integrated on the 0.4.0 branch?
Secondly, I notice that there are very audible delay's/mismatch on
the music listened from different machines. Is this normal? It would be
great to have all be in synch, so that users near to others listening (at
moderate volumes) music from their own speakers hear the same, dunno if
this is impossible though.
cheers, and thanks in advance!
