This is exactly the reason why I'm not very interested in the reencode stuff -- the reencoding to lower bitrates just sounds terribly. I don't know if I need to tweak the settings in lame or if lame isn't suited for encoding low bitrate stuff. You may want to try to reencode some files by hand with lame and see if you can find a set of flags/settings that comes up with a realistic sounding stream.
