Hi all I too have issues with the Obzfest. I live in Ivy, just across the tracks from the concert venue. We could clearly hear all the music being played, from the morning when it started until the time it closed. It was incredibly loud. I really feel sorry for those people living even closer to the source of the noise.
I got hardly any sleep this weekend, as the music stopped at midnight but parties continued in the street until 3am. Then the street noise started again at 10 the next morning and the music at 12. Our street is littered with broken glass and other human "leavings". Our wing mirror was smashed by someone trying to make a quick getaway from the festival. When did the Obzfest change from a street carnival to a music festival? I remember the first Obzfest I came to, there were more market stalls and street performers than drunks and the music was restrained to a stage near the top of Lower Main. Now the stalls are shunted into a small corner, there are various live music sites and nothing for people to look at in the streets other than the drunken teenager falling down and vomiting next to you. It was so crowded that we had trouble getting through to the concert venue for the one band we did want to see. The crime was another issue. With so many people crowded so close, and so many of them less than completely aware of their surroundings, pickpockets were rife. Was there any extra security provided by either the fesitval "organisers" or the police? I would be interested to see crime stats for the weekend, especially for car-breakins and personal crime (muggings, pickpockets). I realise I'm sounding like a killjoy here, but it really seems that the festival benefits the visitors to Obs more than the residents, who are left to clean up the mess left by these pigs. I enjoy live music, but in its proper place (eg in a designated club, or festivals out in the countryside). Were the Obs residents consulted at all when it was decided to change the focus of the Obzfest to be more about live music?
