My husband and I are relatively new to Observatory but have lived through two fests. I don't understand in a neighbourhood that try's so hard to combat crime, vandalism and loitering that once a year we write an open invitation to the world to come and do what they want to, to our beautiful neighbourhood. I've heard about two muggings during the fest one in which the guy pointed out to the police officers on duty who robbed him and they said they can't help him they're busy. The other my next-door neighbour who usually walks around ob's at night, decided this was a bad idea and got an escort, was confronted by quite a few men who relieved her of her cell-phone. What I'd like to know is, who benefits? Do our parks get up-graded, do we get more police on the streets, are the streets cleaner? I haven't seen it. So what is the point? The idea that a few businesses increase their profit margin before the end of the year at the expense of every single person who lives in Obz. Every weekend we have to put up with loud music coming from the clubs, cars driving past my house with thumping base at 3 am, drunk loud people walking past without a thought that above everything this is a residential neighbourhood. So why do we have to put one weekend aside every year to invite people to do this x100 at our expense and close our roads off as-well. And to put the cherry on-top the whole event wasn't particularly well organised. The stalls at the market made a lot less money then they had in the past (some didn't even cover their expenses), the market was dusty, there wasn't any decent toilet facilities (who want's to go to a porta-potty a thousand drunk people have been to before you), they couldn't get water or food near-by, there weren't enough dustbins, alot of people thaught that they had to pay to get into the market and totally circumnavigated the market. The band stand on main- road cut off all the other businesses behind it. There was no usual community vibe, it was all sectioned off.
