Crime update from Scott Rd. Following the attempted theft of my Mazda a week ago, thieves stole the battery out of the car while it was parked in the street outside our house between 11.15 and 12.15 this morning. The same thing happened about a year ago, same modus operandi. Car not broken into, bonnet closed, nothing visibly wrong with the car - except it no longer has a battery. The garage reports that the same thing happened recently to a Nissan bakkie round the corner from me. So be aware of the risks if you leave your car parked in the street: (i) theft out of vehicle (usually by breaking a window - more than one incident a day); (ii) theft of car battery (I wonder how many other people this has happened to recently?); (ii) theft of car wheels, esp. if you drive a Golf (these thieves have been arrested but are already out on bail); and finally, (iv) theft of the vehicle itself (10 or 12 cars are stolen every month in Obs. My previous Mazda was stolen in May last year!) What can you do (apart from pay increased insurance premiums and excesses)? Join the ONW and become an active patroller. If you don't have a two-way radio, you'll be loaned one for the duration of the patrol. Rob --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~
