Dear All,
In the last week or so, sixteen suspects have been arrested in
Woodstock for drug related crimes, eight for heroin and eight for
dagga. The eight who were arrested for possession of dagga (quite a
large amount) were caught in possession and in the act of cleaning the
dope and smoking it. They were all released on R 500.00 bail the
moment they appeared in court. There seems to be something seriously
wrong with the magistrates in our Cape Town courts. I can remember
when a case like this would be wrapped up the same day and the accused
sentenced, either to a fine or a suspended sentence or jail time, if
found guilty. It is no wonder that these miscreants and recidivists
are still out, prowling our streets, mugging innocent people and
breaking in to our cars and homes.
Whatever happened to the right to a speedy trial? It would seem the
magistrates are procrastinators of note, granting bail in order to
delay a trial, or strike it off the roll. I would really like to
confront the magistrates on the issue of bail. If anyone has the know-
how of how this prickly issue can be handled, I would like to hear
from you. And I mean people in the know, not people who think they
know.
Brian Gray.
