Makro sell kits for sure but I am not sure how good they will be.

The best are ip cameras and they offer better resolution but they are
the most expensive. Wireless IP is even more convenient (and
expensive)

As far as I know IP cameras just connect to your normal network and
stream the video. An application then records it to disk.

Otherwise you need cameras that connect to a capture card on your pc
which then record whats going on to disk.

You can get a poormans surveillance system using a 4 cheap (R300 or
less) web cams connected to a pc - you have the problem of not being
able to locate the cameras very far from the pc.

A dedicated DVR box is also quite a good option. Just remember that
however you do it you will be running cable for video and cable for
power. With IP cameras you can do Power over Ethernet and run just one
cable. For conventional cameras you also get cable that combines power
and video. Then you will need a transformer to power your cameras and
of course a capture card to accept the video feeds and a decent pc
with lots of hard disk space to record. Add ADSL Internet and you can
monitor this from where ever you are! Add a wireless community network
and you can share your feed with your neighbours.

I know eagle electric has a decent range of surveillance gear.

Good luck and if you come across a good DIY system or a great
installer let us know.
