Dear Neighbour,

The Sunday Independent (Sunday 09th August 2009), carries as its leader
article "Violence soars amid stats row.'

This piece reinforces the need for community involvement via neighbourhood
watch and community police forums.

The government is most likely losing the 'war against crime' And is
ineffective in several ways. Crime stats are disclosed 18 months in arrears,
for reasons that are futile to speculate about.

Some extracts form the Sunday Independent:

* Proof of increase in violent crime: ten years ago there were several
hundred 'lifers' in prison. Now there are 8,000!
* Almost a third of prisoners were serving sentences of 10 to 15
years.
* Police stats for 2007/08 show that 42,376 house burglaries were
reported in the Western Cape.. (nobody can hazard a guess as to how many
were not reported to SAPS)
* Hollard Insurance says that the national stats show that in SA there
is a house burglary every 2 minutes. (a very good reason to become part of a
neighbourhood watch and look out for each other)
* Vivienne of SA Insurance Association "The criminals are very
organized. For them it's a business." (we need to be organized too)

Regards,

Kris Marais
