Subject: Re: [obsnw] Radio license fees.

Hi Trevor

Thanks for your response, understanding and excellent suggestion
(food-growing-wise).

I do grow my own veg but have a postage stamp garden which curtails my
boundless enthusiasm somewhat.
Take a ride past my place and take a look at what's growing in pots on
my verandah.

I fear that "cookie jars" don't work for me........I constantly dip
into them.
I've never been good at keeping my fingers out of cookie jars and my
Mum wudda told you so.

I take your point, tho', about monthly contributions being
administratively burdensome.
Were I an administrator I wld find that burdensome too.

Concerning my financial restraints on which you have commented.....
I am not complaining.
I don't live in a shack in Khayelitsha.
However on "retiring" (.....about three years earlier than I had
wished to due to phenomenal stresses in the work place) my sweet
little house in Observatory was not paid for.
Resolving this issue took a HUGE proportion of my pension cash payout
to close the bond.
Eating into an already far-from-adequate pension in this way
inevitably substantially reduced my monthly pension payouts.
So moving from employee to a 'retiree' has been quite an adjustment.
Adjusting to a profoundly dysfunctional public health system has also
been a shock to the system......opens one's eyes to how the other half
live and have lived for so long......
In fact I think our public health (non-)system contributes more to ill
health than to recovery from.............
But I digress.....

I have a number of light fittings not working which I would love to
have fixed but simply no longer have the wherewithal.
I am not pleading poverty but need to state my reality as it is.
In my own kind of way I'm also pretty accepting of the way things
are.....

Hope this helps you see where I come from.

For the next couple of years I will gladly contribute say R20 annually
towards the licence fee....not sure for how much longer I'll be able
to continue in this way though.....

Life is never as simple as I would wish it to be.
Ho-hum.....

Bev

Helen sent out invoices to all people with a call sign -
inadvertantly
        - I still need to tell her which people should not have been
billed.

Perhaps Helen can provide this answer.

Ok Factors I guess I did not consider. The payment is
certainly not
inflexible. I just did not think that for anyone living in a
house in
Obs R50 for a year can be a big deal but I am obvioulsy not
correct.
Bev we will sort something out with you as you are one of the
most
active patrollers and have contributed a lot with out any
        compensation.

The R50 was already a reduction from the R100 for those who
could
afford. But I have taken what you say into consideration, and
honestly
if one can not afford it the fee can be waived entirely - I
don't
think anyone will object to that.

the call for

I think this is also fair enough and I addressed it above for
you.

I think that would be a little burdensome on our adminisrators
who
also give freely of their time. Perhaps people could have a
little
money jar and put in R50 a month so when the time comes they
have the
        cash.

        > I also think that when people are called on to purchase a
radio they should
        > at the same time be told of the annual licence fee cost.

Point Taken. I think we did try and levy the R100 fee in
advance as
each radio was purchased - We are now into the second year so
hence
        the additional levy.

However I know some people were not charged and this might
have led to
confusion. Also some people are using radios for which they
did not
pay so they would have been unaware of this.

I think this has been adequately taken care of now, and I
think
        everyone knows about it now!

Finally, and please do mistake this for me being flippant or
anything,
grow your own! A small potted plant can produce a lot of
tomatoes.
Start one every second month and you should never run out! And
you can
        have fun doing so.
