Friday night and Saturday morning on 21/22 May 2010 from about 24:00
till 05:00 an integrated operation was launched in the entire
Woodstock precinct against liquor establishments to check on adherence
to conditions with regard to liquor licences.
The operation involved members of Woodstock SAPS, Reservists and some
SAPS members from other stations. Also present were City Council
officials, who checked premises with regards to noise, health and
safety regulations.
The operation was furthermore attended by the chairperson of Woodstock
CPF, Teun Baartman, as well as the chairperson of the CPF liquor
licence sub-forum, Amy Grainger.

The Woodstock Station Commander, Colonel Van Der Riel, reports the
following results:

The following places were visited and found to be in order:
- ETZITHEBENI BRAAI LOUNGE
- CLIMAX
- SCRUMPY JACK
- GROOVE LOUNGE
- RELOAD
- MOJO’S
- BARMOODA

FINES were issued to the following places by the City Council
enforcement unit:
- MEDITARANEE: R1000-00 (BUSINESS ACT)
- PUB LE JAZZ: R1800-00 (BUSINESS ACT) / R500-00 (HEALTH ACT)
- RAINBOW TAVERN: R500-00 (BUSINESS ACT)

FINES were issued to the following places by Woodstock SAPS:
- MASUBUCA R500-00 FINE & R300 FINE
- PUB LE JAZZ R500-00 FINE
- DREAMS SPORTS BAR – 1 ARREST FOR SELLING LIQUOR OFF THE
PREMISES (UNDERCOVER OPERATION)
- COZY BAR – 1 ARREST

Several warnings were given to liquor outlet owners/managers and
specific attention was given to the closing times of all liquor
outlets to make sure that they had stopped trading by the time which
is specified in their liquor licences.

The operation is part of an ongoing strategy implemented by Woodstock
SAPS to have a zero tolerance attitude towards transgressions of
liquor licence conditions. All transgressions will be recorded and
filed and this information will be used when complaints are lodged
with the Liquor Board or when renewal of licences becomes an issue.
These kinds of operations will be held on a regular basis until the
liquor licence holders get the message that they have to adhere to the
licence conditions. Therefore this strategy - apart from having the
tangible results of fines, closures and arrests - will have the longer
term and wider benefit of sending out a warning that Woodstock police
and community will not put up with liquor licence holders breaking the
rules.
Woodstock CPF strongly supports these actions and congratulates
Woodstock SAPS on the successful outcome of this operation. We also
thank the members of Metro Police and Law Enforcement and especially
the Reservists for their co-operation.

Teun Baartman
(Chair Woodstock CPF)
