I noticed two tattily-dressed, black gents putting a very dirty- looking, some-kinda card into the Std Bank ATM on Main Rd (inside Total Garage shop) this a.m. around 1145-ish. The card was inserted and would then be *whipp'd out* very VERY quickly, and only THEN - when the card was out of the slot - would they key in their needs. I drew the attention of a female shop assistant to what was happening but she was not interested. There happened to be a young SAPS constable in the shop at the same time so I spoke to him. He intervened, asking these guys for their ID whereupon the one guy started yelling and telling him that "I" (Bev) didn't not have my ID on me. Good but ineffective deflective tactics in this instance. Neither of them had identity docs.
I think one of the chaps was Congolese (?) as he spoke French. The other one 'appeared' to speak some Afrikaans.....altho I wasn't convinced that he hadn't simply mastered a couple of Afrik sentences (....not too well). It would've been good if their finger prints had been taken by the SAPS but I don't think this happened. I think the SAPS took them out of the area. On Monday I will let the owner of the garage know what happened. DON'T ASSUME THAT THIS ATM WON'T ALSO BE TAMPERED WITH OR THAT SCAMMERS DON'T HANG AROUND HERE AS WELL.....
