*Statement by Alan Winde, Western Cape Minister of Economic Development and
Tourism*

Judging from the media interest in the new Province’s new liquor legislation
and public debate on this matter, I am surprised that only 11 members of the
public submitted comments on the Draft Regulations for the Western Cape
Liquor Act, 2008. The regulations were first published for comment on 11
February 2011.

The Draft Regulations set the procedures for operating that liquor outlets
must adhere to. These include: applying for new liquor licences, applying
for temporary liquor licences, renewing liquor licences, applying for an
extension of trading hours and appealing against decisions of the Liquor
Board.

It will be compulsory for each and every liquor outlet to adhere to these
regulations. All liquor outlets, suppliers and consumers are therefore
affected by them.

In light of the poor response to the Provincial Government’s calls for
comment on the Draft Regulations, I have decided to extend the comment
period until this Friday, the 11th of March 2011.

Public participation in this process is crucial, and we want to get as many
views as possible from every sector of the liquor industry for this
important piece of legislation.

I would like to appeal, once again, to all the people of the Western Cape
who have any involvement or interest in our liquor laws to visit the Liquor
Board's webpage at www.capegateway.gov.za/wclb and submit comments by close
of business on Friday, 11 March 2011.
