As was noted by Rob, the Candlelight Vigil, Solidarity against Crime held on
Wednesday 13th went off well although not quite to the clockwork precision
timing of last year, or as impressive as the candle lit peace circle or the
vigil goers in holding their lit candles. But what made up for it was the
array of speakers who eloquently addressed the gathering of approximately
150 attendants. The speakers were:

Brett Herron - Candidate Councillor DA for Ward 57.

David Raphael - Observatory Neighbourhood Watch Deputy Chair.

Henk Stutterheim - Observatory Community Police Sub Forum Chairman.

Larissa Melonit - Austrian Tourist’s View on Crime in Observatory.

Lynn O’Ryan - Principal of Observatory Junior School.

Natasha Nel - Observatory Resident affected by Crime.

Patricia de Lille - Mayoral Candidate for DA

Ruth Cornick - On behalf of Mr Barrie Terblanche Editor of Obslife.

Tauriq Jenkins and Rebecca Barnett, local artists rendered a peace song
which they and a few others contributors composed. David Adams, the Pastor
of Jubilee Community Church in Observatory, introduced a minute of silence
and delivered the closing prayer. Colonel Duma Ntsezo, the new Officer
Commanding of the Woodstock Police Station unfortunately could not attend
due to an unforeseen circumstance.

The ONW extends a huge appreciation towards the above speakers and those, as
named below, in lending their valuable assistance or services towards the
success of the 2011 Candlelight Vigil – trusting that I have noted all by
name that helped or supported:

The main note of Patricia de Lille, some of the speakers and the ONW were
that Observatory residents and local business owners should become far more
involved in their suburb from which they draw their safe residency or good
business income. This can be easily achieved by businesses to join the
OCA’s business forum or to render financial assistance to the local
Community Police Sub Forum thus giving back something to the community at
large. Residents could bolster a further drop in crime by their active
vigilance, reporting incidents of crime or of suspicious behaviour via the
ONW’s patrol network or means of quick communications with SAPS and Vetus
Schola, even could strengthen the various civic organisations by way of
seeking membership and participation in meetings and projects.

The ONW remains committed to Observatory and, the hope was expressed, that
Observatory will support the ONW.
