Sorry to read about your incident as well.
On both occasions of our copper pipes being ripped out, the perpetrator
seemed to be cleaning up weeds, leaves etc, but while doing so, waiting his
time to do his thing.
The first time this happened to us was on a Sunday, seen by a neighbour, but
was thought he was working for us.
SOoo, please do check on each others gardeners etc, a VS visit will do
nobody harm, but save us a wack of trouble repairing these pipes.
