It's true about carelessness being a major cause of theft from vehicles. It's often a "never say 'never' " thing - e.g. "I never leave anything valuable visible in my car. Except yesterday I did and ..."
(I myself didn't, btw, but this is what happens - just once in a while something distracts you from being good/sensible - and bang goes whatever it is.)
