Yes it looks a bit desolate now but once the planting and cleanup is complete it will start looking great again. It will be much safer now too. The green and blue is indeed where herbicides were sprayed and as the plant material dies it will be removed or it will rot away in situ. In a few weeks you will be used to the new open look and will never remember the old way!
