TO ALL RESIDENTS:

RCID CRIME UPDATE :

There was ONE incident reported this weekend :

HOUSEBREAKING & THEFT : GREENBANK ROAD : 23rd NOVEMBER
On Friday night at 20h14 suspects gained access to premises in Greenbank
Road by forcing open the front door using a crowbar. The residents had
left the premises at 19h30. The suspects ran straight to the main bedroom
and stole a flat screen TV and items of clothing within 4 minutes. This
particular resident had an incident approximately a year ago when exactly
the same modus operandi was used and a flat screen TV was also stolen from
the main bedroom. It seems very likely that the culprits knew the house
and how to gain access and where to go.

However the report below from Jonathan Hobday (Mowbray CPF) is very
concerning :

"The "Plasma Gang" struck seven times in one night this week - snatching
flat-screen TVs from homes in the Mowbray, Rondebosch and Claremont police
precincts.

The raids were carried out on Friday night, apparently by the same gang and
reportedly driving a dark-coloured VW Golf (a four-door, late-90s, Mark-I
model), with the registration number CA 497-977.

They hit three homes in Mowbray/Rosebank/Park Estate - at Roseland Road,
Richmond Road and Alma Road. They also took plasma-TVs from a home in
Rondebosch and two homes in Claremont on the same night.
Police warn people to ensure that their TV sets are not visible from the
street; they also advise people who have recently bought TVs not to leave
the discarded boxes visible.

With the spike in house breakings in the Southern Suburbs, one hopes it
will never happen to you.

- We would, however, suggest that you make a list of the make, model and
serial numbers of electrical appliances and other valuable equipment. This
information is always useful for investigation purposes. Take photocopies
of all your bank and other cards and the telephone numbers to call in the
event of having to cancel your cards. This will speed up the process.

- When last did you TEST your alarm ?

- Are all outside lights working properly and are your bushes trimmed to
avoid hiding places for criminals ?

- Ensure that you reduce your front door time delays for your alarm to the
minimum. The longer it takes for your alarm to activate the more time the
criminals have inside your home.

- Set time aside to assess the current security measures you have in place
and look for any weaknesses and easy access to your property. Consider
installing garden beams, which means your alarm will be activated before
anyone can get to your front door or gain access .

Together we make Rondebosch safer
