*Drug dealimg in Obs *
*Obslife* has been highlighting this problem recently. I suggest forwarding
your letters to the editor at [email protected].

I also suggest inviting Alderman J. P. Smith (the MAYCO member for safety
and security) to make an on-site investigation of drug hotspots in Obs. I
read In today’s *Cape Times* (page 9) that he and the DA are committed to
making Cape Town “a safe city for all the people who live here’’ – a
laudable aim, but there seems to be a huge gap between theory and practice.
Apparently the Metro police have a unit dedicated to substance abuse, and
apparently Metro police officers “conduct targeted patrols based on crime
threat patterns and analysis, stop and search operations on suspected drug
pushers and users, targeted operations on suspected drug hot spots,” etc.
Does any of this happen in Observatory?. How can drug pushers ply their
trade so brazenly and with such impunity?

I am mindful of the fact that we as ratepayers foot the bill for the Metro
police (and also pay Alderman Smith’s salary).
