Dear Barrie,

We are so sorry to hear about Monica slipping into a coma. I hope she recovers
fully from a horrible and opportunistic crime. With the continual drug problem
which plagues Lower Main Road and the addiction which comes with that, I worry
that other people seen to be vulnerable may be at risk from people who need a
next fix. On the same night as Monica was attacked, there was a man in a
dressing gown shouting and crying that he could not pay a dealer R250, but
would come back with the money, and a scuffle over a telephone which was
resolved by Obs security (I am not sure how).

What has happened to Monica is awful and horrible, and I hope that all is well,
Barrie. Monica is a lovely person.

Wishing her a strong and safe recovery,
Nicci Attfield

A resident of Alfred Street was hijacked at gunpoint in front of his
house

near the cul de sac at around 2am yesterday morning. He was unhurt. The

hijackers made off with his Toyota Tazz. A detective made a home visit a

few hours later to take his statement.

I also saw two police officers inspecting what looked like an abandoned

Toyota Corolla with faded number plates on Ossian Rd yesterday late morning.

My 74-year-old mother Monica is fighting for her life after she was
mugged

in front of her house in Trill Road.

She under went an emergency operation to stem subdural bleeding which had

put so much pressure on her brain that she slipped into a coma. The

operation had successfully removed the pressure, but we will only start

knowing the extent of damage in the next 24 hours.

Last night, my mom returned from a bookclub meeting and was accosted by a

mugger, probably a desperate junkie. She put up a fight in which she

sustained a blow to her cheek before her attacker fled empty-handed. I took

her to hospital and she was discharged after a couple of hours. We decided

that she would spend the night at our house. She went to bed in relatively

good spirits, laughing at funny bits of the incident. She read before she

fell asleep. This morning we couldn't rouse her.

        Hi Barrie,

Very sorry to hear this, but as I look around Obs things seem to be happening
everywhere.

I am also noticing more and more "snow" in the streets.

I trust your Mother comes out of the coma, this is a very worrying time for you.

Trust she will recover.

Regards,

Doug.

*Hi BarrieIt shocks deeply me to read about this tragic attack on your

mother and truly hope that she will recover fully.*

*Rosemary wrote two days ago "My personal belief if that certain

"factions" (?) are trying to convey as little crime as possible. Just my

theory."*

*Thanks for posting this crime Barrie and hope that more residents report

on crime in their street. we in Oxford Road have our fair share but to my

shame I stopped communicating them to the powers to be by lack of any

meaningful response. It's hoped that certain "factions" will pick up on this

topic and start to inform the rate paying community of crime trends and

patterns in order for us to make an informed decision to walk the

Observatory Streets. It's nothing less than what we should be entitled to

and pay for. The Observatory Community worked very hard for many years for

a caring and sharing community and things have to change soon.*
