This is in at least one point, false information.
OCA does not make our main focus trying to block large developments!
We spend our time on many important things and one of these is working towards
changing inappropriate development proposals, using appropriate consultation,
following the principles set in City and Heritage Western Cape policy. We also
are working towards appropriate development which is compliant and respects the
heritage areas, the natural areas and the declared parks and open space. We are
not against high density development that is well planed and well located. It
should also include a range of affordable types- not just cater for the upper
end of the market.
We have in fact engaged with developers in support of upgrading the area and
also where ‘Crump Towers’ are. There may be opportunity to fix up the derelict
site and establish an appropriate alternative that would respect the heritage
area and provide high good quality use. It seems that prospective developers
are turned away by an unrealistic attitude of the somewhat careless.
So far nothing has improved after years of attempts and after all the talk of
selling that did not materialise, a new stalling attempt to talk about
“improving”?
What specifically is being proposed?
Marc

Hallo,

The owners of Trump Towers have been in touch with me, and it seems they are a
bit interested in improving the building.

I agree OBSID can bring pressure to CoCT, I am sure they already do this! But
also OCA as a civic representing the residents, instead of making their entire
focus on trying to block large developments, which will, in long term, improve
the hood.

The landlords of Trump are challenging, but seems they love the idea of Art on
Main.

Dear all,

I'd like to add my support to Barbara's comments on buildings like Trump
Towers; many Obs landlords are clearly utterly careless, and I feel a good
lawyer's letter from the well-funded Obsid could go far in reminding them of
their civic duty, let alone legal obligations not to potentially be allowing
crime etc, as well as the physical and social degradation of Lowermain Rd so
far for at least a decade. It would be helpful to exert some sustained pressure
on them and others. I'm not sure if it's been considered before. It for one is
a disgrace and dangerous to ignore as seemingly has been done. Prominent other
messy buildings, like at the top of Station Rd for example, could also do with
formal reminders on obviously needed renovations. I see this as one of Obsid's
key roles.

Kind regards,

Sam Waumsley

Hi All,

We all have our visions – but visions not enacted are just visions.

Become part of the change.

My vision is an art space along lower main, activate trump towers, get rid of
the drug dealers, and get a better clientele into the hood. Move away from
purely food and booze, as well as community based upliftment.

If each of us takes one positive step, the overall result will be amazing.

We opened our Gallery Ahem Art Collective, the help enlisted – 2 refugees, 3
people from the shelter – a fourth person in recovery soon to be kitchen staff.
That is how to make a change. Start from the bottom up. It was disappointing
that nearly all those who attended the opening night were from out of
Observatory, art lovers from all over Cape Town, and save for Hudson from
OBSID, never saw any of the “Observatory leaders”.

Regards,

Barbara

Hi Everyone,,,, visible policing is the best deterrent against crime ,,, the
bobby on the beat ,,,,, however Obs is big and the bobby cannot be everywhere
at the same time ,,,, the next best deterrent is CCTV cameras ,,,, we should
have many more of them in Obs ,,,, however , what about the existing cameras
??? ,,,, do they work ??? ,,, are they manned 24/7 by qualified and reliable
personnel ??? ,,, do the cameras produce a clear picture ??? ,,, is the movie
recorded ??? ,,, is proper use being made of the existing cameras ???

On behalf of the OCA, we would be most interested in participating in a
vision exercise.
Early 2016, the OCA undertook the beginning of such an exercise - see
attached document.
We did not take this further as we felt very underrepresented in terms of
creating a vision for Obs - and there were only 12 of us at the meeting!
We would be very happy to co-ordinate or host such a visioning meeting of
the three organisations and their members/board.

I would suggest either the regular OCA meeting scheduled for the last
Tuesday of the month could be used (May 2017) or we could organise a separate
meeting on another date.

Please let me know what everyone feels/thinks about this.
      Best wishes
      Carolyn
