Andrew, I know in the past you have ruled this out, but I really think the messages below show that an old static lib (one ending in .a and not in .la or .so) is being linked to from /usr/local/lib, which probably isn't where the dynamic lib should be if you used a subdirectory in your home directory for installing external packages. This is why I build everything in a subdirectory of my home directory and do not touch /usr/local/lib or /usr/lib.
